Best way to get fit – Part 1

I have lost 100 pounds, and have kept it off for 13 years. My secret? First step, get sick. Not really, but that was the event that started me on a new direction in my life. I was 265 pounds, at five feet ten inches high, a very heavy drinker, and headed downhill fast. After spending eight days in the hospital with diverticulitis I had plenty of time to think about my life. the first thing I did was decided to stop drinking for a month. I never drank again. No AA, no medication, luckily the strong urge to drink my usual half bottle of vodka went away. I can’t explain why. I quickly lost a good amount of weight. That first step triggered my motivation to follow this trend through to see what I could continue to do. I started riding a bicycle, adding more miles and losing more weight. I discovered, as I lost weight, that I was a strong rider. Slowly my competitive urges began to take hold. This created my prime source of motivation for continuing my weight loss. Anyone that rides bicycles for sport knows that excess weight is a penalty. I have used this, along with other aids, to keep my weight within a ten pound range for all these years. In essence, I needed a source of physical activity that would be fun. The weight loss and healthy lifestyle was just a result, an added bonus.
