The secrets to successful weight loss – Part 15

Life is extraordinarily busy today and it’s difficult to take time out of your schedule to take care of yourself. There’s work, family and the house to take care of, so squeezing time in for your self can be a tall order. I found myself stuck in the rut of caring for my family, working and putting my needs on the back burner for a long time. As a result, the number on the scale crept up and I seemed to be powerless to stop it.

I finally had enough and over the last year I’ve made some significant changes in my life. As a result I’ve taken off all the extra pounds I gained during pregnancy and then some. I’m practically back to the size I was in high school, and the truth is, if I can do it, you can too. Here are some changes I made that really worked.

First, make time for yourself. There’s nothing more important to weight loss than taking the time to do it right. It’s so easy to get caught up in the craziness of work and family, so you have to make time for yourself to exercise and eat right. Your life will benefit far more from exercise and healthy eating habits than from being a frazzled, stressed-out maniac.

Make small changes. Rome wasn’t built in a day and you didn’t put your weight on in a day, either. Instead of making vast, sweeping changes to your life try making small changes, like not having second helpings at meals and exercising a little more each week. These small changes will add up over time and you’ll look back and say “Wow, I can’t believe how different I do things now.”

Commit yourself to your weight loss and get buy-in from your family. Don’t let anything get in the way of your workout and healthy eating habits. It’s hard enough to stay on track by yourself but it’s impossible if you don’t have the support of family members. Get them to commit to giving you the time to exercise and eating the types of food you’ll need to eat to reach your ideal weight.

Hire a personal trainer or join a gym. A trainer gives you somebody else to be accountable to. They also provide valuable insight into proper diet and exercise. If you can’t afford a trainer, at the very least join a gym. You need to get out of the house to exercise so you’re free of distractions and have the time to get yourself in the right mindset.

Don’t panic. The path to sustainable weight loss is a gradual lifestyle change. Along the way life will happen and you’ll find yourself in a position where you have to eat something you shouldn’t, or you can’t make time to exercise. It’s OK. The trick is not to panic and quit. Just get up the next day and get back to doing what you need to do.

If you make these changes and take the time to let them work, you’ll suddenly find yourself living a healthy lifestyle that you’ll be able to sustain for the rest of your life. You’ll be happier and your friends and family will benefit from the example you’ve set for them. So get out there and get started. A happy, healthy, energetic you awaits!
